Rude and Negative Behaviour

  • Never lose your temper or use sarcasm.
  • Remind pupils of the "behaviour rules" - these should be whole school rules known to all, displayed in each learning environment, consistently applied and have a clear hierarchy of sanctions for offences. Firmness and consistency create stability.
  • Refuse to take the blame for rudeness - start each day afresh with consistent expectations of pupils' behaviour.
  • Know what policy exists within your school.
  • Make punishments positive. Enter into dialogue about the behaviour and the consequence, allow the pupil choice.
  • Use humour to diffuse tension.
  • Agree "contracts" for improving negative behaviour.
  • Condemn the act NOT the child.
