What is Word Processing?

Word Processing enables you to work in the Language, Literacy and Communicating Skills area of the Early Years Desirable Outcomes. Word Processing is the ability to enter, edit, manipulate, store and print pages of text using a computer. Most modern word processors have desktop publishing (DTP) capabilities.

Desktop publishing (DTP) is the combining of text and graphics, laid out or arranged to produce a finished product.

Examples of using Word Processing:

  • an on-screen worksheet where pupils match pictures to words
  • an on-screen worksheet where pupils match words to words
  • use a concept keyboard or an on-screen grid of words to create simple sentences
  • use the keyboard to create words and/or simple sentences - eg. write their name to be printed and used as a label for their tray or make a bookmark
  • pupils make word labels linked to letter/sentence patterns currently in use
  • move words on screen to unscramble a simple sentence
  • creating posters to simulate 'big book' activities
