Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching

a. Aims and Objectives

The teacher's aim for the sake of this case study is to develop work in pupils' understanding of theatre design and its impact on performance and experience of Drama. The pupils are in year ten, have a variety of interests in Drama, and mostly see it as a practical subject that embraces performance and the supplementary functions that support performance. They are therefore happy to talk about lighting, set design, props and make-up, for example, but see these things from a practical point of view and are not entirely sure where ICT comes in.

As we meet the teacher, he has previously taught the main area of work through a variety of methods, and has always been keen to have pupils work on a range of practical activities. Theatre design has previously taken the form of visits to theatres, discussions of the impact of space on performance/experience and from time to time the use of architectural plans and drawings.

Specifically, over an introductory two week phase of his programme, the teacher wants the pupils at this phase of their learning to be able to:

  • Explain some common features of theatre design, such as:
    • seating arrangements
    • visual access
    • layering of tiers
    • performer-audience placing
    • support-performer placing
  • Discuss the impact of theatre design on performance and experience, especially in relation to:
    • acoustics
    • actor-presentation
    • set-design implications
    • lighting
    • audience visual, auditory and positional experience
  • Explore ways of representing theatre design on paper
  • Create a theatre design in one of three formats provided, using Word or a drawing application OR
  • Transpose a design from one of three formats to the other

Questions for Consideration

  • If you currently deal with this area of work in the classroom, or with an analogous or related area, how do you do so?
  • Do you use real examples of theatre designs to illustrate points, and how do you manage use of and access to these?
  • What are the main problems you would expect to encounter when you work with real examples of theatre design through actual visits or real design drawings?

Keep a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion with your mentor.

b. Deciding Whether to Use ICT
