Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching

a. Aims and Objectives

The teacher's aim for the sake of this case study is to develop the learners' ability to relay a set of instructions in order to produce recipes linked to their cookery sessions. As we meet the teacher they have recently discussed with another teacher the learners' skills in simple meal preparation session. It may be in your case that the learners have previously carried out the task with you, or that they are about to present to others and there is no need to meet with other teachers.

The teacher has a list of the meals that the learners have previously prepared, a list of ingredients used for each meal and the appropriate equipment used. At the end of the activity the teacher wants the learners to provide opinions on the meals that are described, a survey of the likes and dislikes of the group will be carried out to conclude the activity.

Specifically, the teacher wants the pupils to carry out a range of tasks suitable to their ability level. The following are a list of aims that could be met by a number of students over a wide ability range.

  • Find a suitable picture of the meal/item that they are about to describe, using the resources available, Internet, CD-ROM, symbol/graphics packages.
  • Word-process a list of the ingredients and equipment that is needed to produce the item. Differentiation will be needed here, as some students will be able to carry this out with limited support, others will need a large word list from which they select the appropriate items. Others will be able to produce the list from a pictorial worksheet from which they have to identify the relevant items.
  • Make a list of instructions to be followed. Similar differentiation methods will need to be taken into consideration again as in the above task.
  • Share the learning experience with other learners in the group. For those that are able, e-mail can be used to send a copy of the recipe to others in the group, others will be able to talk about their experience with print outs of the recipe that they have produced.
  • Carry out a short survey to find the likes and dislikes of the learners.
  • Produce a visual display of the results on likes and dislikes.

Questions for Consideration

  • How do you currently deal with this or any other similar text in the classroom?
  • Do you use pictures, cartoon images or video to illustrate points, and how do you manage use of these?
  • What are the main problems encountered by pupils when they work at producing written text to describe an activity or event that they have participated in?

Keep a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion with your mentor.

b. Deciding Whether to Use ICT
