Good News Help

What is the delay between messages?

There is a preset delay of 25 seconds between each message appearing. This cannot be changed without altering the program. However, if you are adamant that there should be a different delay, please e-mail John Mills and I will try to provide a different version.

Printing messages

Selecting the Printer icon will open up the print dialogue box on your screen. As long as your printer is correctly set up, clicking the print button will print the information currently displayed on the page.

Copying text

To copy any of the text from the News Feeder area you will have to highlight the text. Do this by taking your mouse pointer to the left of the first word, hold down the left mouse button then move to the right of the last word. When the text is highlighted, click the right mouse button to reveal a menu and select Copy from the menu. Highlighted text can also be copied by pressing Ctrl and C together on the keyboard.

Pasting text

When you have copied the text as above, create a new document in your favourite word processor or desktop publishing program. Now look in the toolbar for the Clipboard icon and select it with the mouse. Your copied text will now be pasted into the document. Alternatively, you will find the Paste command in the Edit menu of most programs. Keyboard shortcut for Paste: Ctrl and V.

Stopping the News Feeder

To halt or finish the News Feeder window, close it by clicking the cross in the top right corner of the window (Close icon). You cannot start the News Feeder from where you left off during the previous session - it always begins at the beginning!

Setting the Clock/Date display

The time and date display is taken from your computer's internal clock settings. If these are wrong, then the display will be wrong. To set your computer's time and date, double-click the current time setting which is displayed at the extreme right of the Task Bar (bottom of the screen). A dialogue box will open allowing you to alter the settings. Obviously, you may want to alter the time and date to any value you need to add historic interest to your news feed.

The image window has disappeared!

There are two reasons for this. First, it may be hiding behind the News Feeder window. In this case, drag the News Feeder window somewhere else on the screen so that both windows are side by side. Secondly, you may have closed it by selecting its cross (Close icon). Don't worry: each news item's heading will open an image in a bigger window when selected.

Windows overlap

The two windows which are used to display information should fit comfortably on a screen set to 800x600 in 16bit colour (high colour). If your screen is set smaller than this, the two windows will overlap. In particular, when you click on a message title, the News Feeder window will sit on top of the image window.
