Mary was the eldest child and elder daughter of Henry VIII. As the daughter of Catherine of Aragon, she was a devoted Catholic.

During her short reign (1553-8) she made England Catholic again, reversing all of the Protestant measures of Edward VI's reign. She is sometimes known as 'Bloody Mary' because of the number of Protestants who were burned at the stake during her reign.
