Welsh Second Language
Quality of Learning
- Learning of a very good quality was observed. When clear objectives and enthusiastic introductions are given by the teachers, pupils respond well to tasks and work collaboratively at a good pace.
- Pupils are motivated to take part in communicative tasks and can work effectively in groups and pairs.
- Many pupils make good use of resources and access language prompt cards and dictionaries to improve their language skills.
Quality of Teaching
- The quality of teaching is good overall with very good teaching evident in some classes.
- Nearly all teachers observed have accessed suitable language training.
- The timing and quality of teacher inputs is generally good. Lessons are well planned and provide pupils with opportunities to develop all language skills.
- Much of the teaching motivates all pupils. Effective differentiation was observed, in particular for those pupils who are 'late-comers' to the study of Welsh.
- In the best teaching, pupils are consistently encouraged to give alternative, more extended oral responses. Pupils are also challenged to improve the quality of their oral and written work.
- In a minority of cases, teachers do not make substantial use of the target language and some of the teacher introductions are too long.
