Welsh Second Language
Areas for Development
- All schools would benefit from further developing their awareness of the potential of ICT in relation to the teaching and learning of Welsh Second Language, including accessing the National Grid for Learning.
- Curricular leaders and Y5/Y6 teachers in some schools need to provide a greater range of writing tasks at the top of KS2.
- Some schools need to access support and guidance re: National Curriculum Standards in Y5/Y6 using ACCAC O.A.M's for Welsh Second Language.
- Relevant LEA officers, working with Baglan IT, ELRS and in particular St. Helen's, need to support schools to address the above issues and to continue to share good practice, especially in the following areas identified by schools during the review:
- LEA wide portfolio of pupils' work – including exemplification of oral standards on video.
- School self-evaluation of Welsh Second Language.
- Cross-curricular strategies.
- Further KS2/KS3 transition initiatives.
All schools displayed evidence of St. David's Day celebrations. In the best practice, eisteddfod competitions were organised for all subject areas, and the relevance and potential of the Cwricwlwm Cymreig was fully realised – for both teachers and pupils. Many pupils were very keen (even determined) to share their St. David's Day experiences with us.
