Abercregan

Abercregan lies across the valley from Cymmer. There was much coal here and the village lay on the route of the South Wales Mineral Railway. Some 200 houses were built for miners and their families. Many were built on rock ledges cut into the steep hillside each requiring a high retaining wall.

Abercregan has seen the greatest loss of amenities of any village in the valley. Gone are the chapel, Miner’s Welfare Hall, Abercregan Hotel, school, police station and shops. Some of the last houses to be built, they were among the first to be knocked down.

AbercreganFew houses now remain with many of the villagers being re-housed at Croeserw in the 1960s. The only access is by road from Cymmer.
