These pictures
show the route the Mumbles Train took from Rutland Street to St. Helen's
Station. Most of this area has been redeveloped. A new road has replaced
the Mumbles and Shrewsbury railway lines. Some landmarks remain such
as Swansea Prison and the pedestrian footbridge.
This
is the pedestrian footbridge at St. Helen's. The bridge has been
used for decades by people going to the beach. The St. Helen's Rugby
and Cricket ground can be seen in the distance on the right hand
side of the road. |

Below right
is the view towards the Mumbles, taken from the pedestrian footbridge. The
modern building in the distance is part of University College, Swansea.
The St. Helen's Rugby and Cricket ground is on the right. The last rugby
international was played here in 1954. Where do you think the track
of the Mumbles train ran?

In
the video, a Mumbles Train approaches the pedestrian footbridge
from the Mumbles on route to the Rutland Street terminus. The film
was shot from the footbridge, shortly before the closure of the
Mumbles Railway. When you play the video, notice any similarities
to the photographs taken from the footbridge. The video commentary
will help you. |
Above left
is the view from the pedestrian footbridge towards Swansea. The photograph,
which looks down Oystermouth Road, was taken in July 1995.
The City
and County of Swansea's County Hall can be seen in the distance. The
road junction on the left leads to St. Helen's Road. This road was the
main route into the centre of Swansea before Oystermouth Road was developed
into a dual carriageway.
