There has been a public outcry following
our disclosure of council plans for the development of the Riverside
waste ground area. The council had planned to turn the area
into a car park, but now they will have to think again. Local residents
and the business community have all come up with various suggestions
for what they consider to be more appropriate use of the site. Suggestions
range from a playground to an industrial zone and trying to sort
out the best option could turn out to be a real headache for the
council. At present, the site is dangerous and an eyesore. Clearly,
the council are right in wanting to improve the area, but so far
their plans seem to have pleased no-one. One resident said "It's
about time something was done, but it needs to be for the benefit
of local people not just something that the councillors can
pat themselves on the back for. Look at all those shiny new buildings
on the industrial park across the river - they're all empty".
Council leader Ron Dobson has promised to consult widely on the
issue, but it seems unlikely that he's going to satisfy everyone.
