Welsh Second Language
Standards in Welsh Second Language
- In the schools visited, standards of achievement in Welsh as a Second Language are good overall.
- In some classes, in KS1 & Y3 & Y4, there is ample evidence of good and very good standards – especially in pupils' oral work.
- Pupils' listening skills are well developed. Pupils listen attentively and respond appropriately in structured situations.
- Most pupils speak clearly and provide correct, quite extended oral responses. Intonation and pronunciation are consistently good. In the best practice pupils role-play in a range of situations, using appropriate language. In some schools pupils work confidently without any teacher cues or scripts.
- The use of 'Helpwr Heddiw' is very effective in all schools to promote individuals' oral confidence.
- Pupils read with clarity and meaning in their Second Language. Pupils read the 'Acen' big books with enthusiasm and fully understand the Paent Gwlyb reading books. Reading comprehension skills are well developed, especially at KS1. Many schools also use electronic books to promote and consolidate pupils' reading skills.
- Pupils write for a range of purposes and can structure their written work effectively. In some cases, in Y5 & Y6 the range and quality of the pupils' written work does not comply fully with the demands of the Programme of Study.
