The teacher revised
the concept of data handling with the class. Everyday applications
of data handling and uses in a wider context were discussed.
A data handling exercise investigating the properties of a number
of geometric nets was undertaken. The pupils were required to study
their given net and complete a data capture which recorded properties
such as:
- Name of shape.
- Number of faces.
- Number of edges.
- Number of vertices.
The information recorded on these data capture sheets was then transferred
into a prepared file. The work was saved, retrieved and edited at
regular intervals to ensure accuracy. The teacher produced detailed,
differentiated task sheets, which required the pupils to carefully
interrogate the data. Simple and complex searches using the AND,
OR, NOT, LESS THAN, GREATER THAN and EQUAL operators were carried
out within the class. Certain aspects of the data were studied using
the list facility while others were displayed as graphs and interpreted
by the children.
Assessment of IT skills took place through constant observation
and discussions were carried out before, during and after the activity.
This activity complimented the Mathematics being carried out at
the time. The project served to reinforce and extend pupils' understanding
of the properties of 3-D shapes and the use of the mathematical
vocabulary.
