Case Study: Communicating

Age Range:  Year 6

Module:  Communicating Advanced. (Linking pages to create an electronic book and sending an e-mail with attachments.)

Outline of Activity

The teacher taught the children how to create and link pages within a word processor. The children were given a task of:

  • creating documents on Egyptian Gods/Goddesses
  • linking the pages together
  • sending an e-mail with attachment.

They followed differentiated worksheets, which asked the children to think about the audience, create text frames, text flows and select suitable images taken from the Internet (previously book marked by the Teacher). The children saved and printed independently.

The teacher demonstrated the children how to load the e-mailing program and discussed the importance of passwords and why they are needed within a school. Using the previously created invitation the teacher showed the children how to create an e-mail and attach the invitation. The e-mail was sent from one computer to another within the school to show the children what would happen and how to open an attachment.

The children were then given the opportunity to create their own invitations. The task was to create frames with a suitable background colour and write an invitation to someone. They were asked to import images to enhance their invitation and send them via e-mail to one another.

These activities provided the children with the opportunity of creating attachments and consolidating skills in History, Language and IT. Assessment of IT skills took place through constant observation and discussion with the children.
