Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching
a.
Aims and Objectives
The
teacher's aim for the sake of this case study is to cover some
issues in dramatic characterisation and casting, and to establish
a scenario where pupils can work from known characters into casting
based on features of the characters. The teacher has considered
using pupils' families for casting, and using pupils casting of
each other, but has rejected the first on the grounds that not
all characters would be known to all pupils and the second on
the grounds of personal issues in the classroom.
In
this case the learners are GCSE pupils in a mixed gender Comprehensive
school, and are following the Drama programme in year eleven for
a variety of reasons. As we meet the teacher, he has previously
taught the main area of work through a variety of methods, and
has always been keen to have pupils work on a range of casting
exercises. The main purpose of the exercises is to consider the
relation between character traits, dramatic purpose and cast members.
Specifically,
over an introductory two-week phase of his programme, the teacher
wants the pupils at this phase of their learning to be able to:
-
Identify some character traits of generally known Soap Opera
characters.
- Align
some of those traits with characters in a given Shakespeare
play, establishing at the same time a link with pupils' GCSE
English coursework.
- Provide
an explanation of the casting of the soap characters in the
Shakespeare roles.
- Produce
a cast list using text and images in a table.
Questions
for Consideration
- How
do you currently deal with this area of work in the classroom?
- Do
you use real examples of casting activity to illustrate points,
and how do you manage use of and access to these?
- What
are the main problems encountered when you work with real examples
of casting?
Keep
a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion
with your mentor.
