Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching
a.
Aims and Objectives
The
teacher's aim for the sake of this case study is to introduce
learners to the Dickens story, 'A Christmas Carol'. In this case
the learners are Year 10 pupils in a mixed gender comprehensive
school and the text is a set text for the pupils' GCSE English
course. As we meet the teacher, she has previously taught the
book and likes it, though she is concerned at the extent and quality
of the book-stock for this text in the school. The pupils have
never experienced Dickens or any other pre-twentieth century author
in a formally assessed setting.
Specifically,
the teacher wants the pupils at this phase of their learning on
the book to:
-
Relate the plot of the story
- Distinguish
between the characters
- Identify
the ghosts and their purpose in the story
- Identify
the main moral and social themes of the story
- Comment
to a limited extent on the mood and imagery of the story
Questions
for Consideration
- How
do you currently deal with this or any other similar text in
the classroom?
- Do
you use pictures, cartoon images or video to illustrate points,
and how do you manage use of these?
- What
are the main problems encountered by pupils when they work with
any pre-twentieth century text, or specifically with Dickens?
Keep
a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion
with your mentor.
