Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching
a.
Aims and Objectives
The
teacher's aim in this case study was to teach her year 10 GCSE
students about the all the issues concerned with data protection.
She wanted to do this before they started on their coursework
projects, so that they would be able to apply the relevant principles
of data protection right from the start of their projects. The
students had carried out practical work on database design during
their KS3 IT course, and she expected that they would have considered
some of the data protection issues then, but not in any depth.
Thus
her specific objectives were that students should be able to:
-
Explain what was meant by data protection, and why it is necessary.
- Explain
the threats to data protection from theft, unauthorised access,
viruses, accidental corruption.
- Describe
various methods for overcoming these threats and minimising
their effects.
- Discuss
the ethics of personal data storage and transfer and list the
main principles, procedures and exemptions of the Data Protection
Act.
Questions
for Consideration
- How
do you currently deal with this or any other similar topic in
the classroom?
- Do
you use video or other audio-visual aids to illustrate points,
and how do you manage use of these?
- What
are the main problems encountered by pupils when they work with
"theoretical" ideas in GCSE IT?
Keep
a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion
with your mentor.
