Planning the Work of Learners
In
the case study teacher's experience, planning the work of learners
using ICT has created a number of problems. The teacher is using
a database to accelerate the process of data handling and analysis
and not to replace any of the reasoning or analytical ability
of the students.
The
teacher was keen to ensure that students proved their understanding
of the subject by providing written explanation of their findings.
The teacher was also keen to ensure that any calculations were
also written out on paper and a selection of charts drawn by hand.
The
teacher also recognised the significance of data entry and the
attitude of the students to this boring task. She is keen to ensure
that students share equally this task. Although students would
be working in groups for this task she wishes to ensure that there
is enough computers available for them to have one each.
- How
long will you take to deal with the topics from start to finish,
including the production of coursework and data entry?
- How
much of this time will you spend using a computer, database
files or creating help sheets for the students?
- How
will you arrange importing files into one?
These
questions are crucial at this stage, and you might want to discuss
them with colleagues and/or your mentor before you create a scheme
of work that includes the use of ICT, however rough the scheme
is at the beginning. Once you are happy that you have a plan of
how to use ICT effectively for the work you want to on the topics,
you should go on to consider some lesson plans for actually applying
it in the classroom.
