Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching

a. Aims and Objectives

The teacher's aim for the sake of this case study is to develop the learner's ability to carry out a range of tasks and to demonstrate skills, which will be assessed against the Key Skills Information Technology Curriculum. In this case, the students are working towards IT Key Skills Level 2 - Searching for and Selecting Information. The teacher has used a variety of methods of improving the student's ability to apply their IT skills to straightforward tasks, including didactic teaching, textbooks and other print materials and the use of videos for case studies.

Specifically, the teacher needs to assess the students on the following areas:

  • IT 2.1 Search for and select information for two different purposes.
    • Identify the information you need and suitable sources.
    • Carry out effective searches.
    • Select information that is relevant to your purpose.
    • Sample evidence: Print outs of relevant information, combined with notes on data source/how you selected sources, annotated observation of your use of IT.

  • IT 2.2 Explore and develop information, and derive new information for two different purposes.
    • Enter and bring together information using formats that help development. Use appropriate layouts for presenting information in a consistent way.
    • Explore information as needed for your purpose.
    • Develop information and derive new information as appropriate.
    • Sample evidence: Print outs of relevant information, assessors' records combined with annotations illustrating how to explore and develop new information.

  • IT 2.3 Present combined information for two different purposes, including at least one example of text, one example of images and one example of numbers.
    • Elect and use appropriate layouts for presenting combined information in a consistent way.
    • Develop the presentation to suit your purpose and the types of information.
    • Ensure your work is accurate, clear and saved appropriately.
    • Sample evidence: Working drafts or assessor records annotated to show how content and presentation have been developed. Printouts or prints of static or dynamic screen displays. Records of how you saved information.

Questions for Consideration

  • How do you currently deal with this or any other similar teaching in the classroom?
  • Do you use any ICT based methods to gather and present information?
  • How do you manage the use of these?

Keep a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion with your mentor.

b. Deciding Whether to Use ICT
