Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching

a. Aims and Objectives

The teacher's aim for the sake of this case study is to encourage learners to develop meaning from current news events and discuss with others a variety of topics making the headlines. The teacher has decided to carry out this activity as an intensive activity. There needs to be a limited time interval between the start and completion of the activity due to the complexity of news events changing on a daily basis. As we meet the teacher, she has used a variety of methods of promoting discussion, including newspapers - local and national.

The teacher has also taped some local and national news events that the learners have watched on video. The learners have also been involved in making their own news events relating to their own life experience and those relating to their local community.

Specifically, the teacher wants the learners to carry out a range of tasks suitable to their ability level. The following are a list of aims that could be met by a number of students over a wide ability range:

  • Browse news stories from a variety of available resources - newspapers (local and national), video, radio and the Internet.
  • Relate to a specific, or number of, stories by providing a personal verbal account of the chosen article.
  • Search for graphics/symbols to be used next to the news article.
  • Print an article from the Internet.
  • Identify keywords from the chosen article.
  • Produce a personal account of the story. Differentiation will be needed here, as some of the learners will be able to carry out the task with limited support. Others may need wordlists and symbolic support to identify words.
  • Utilize a variety of text formats to distinguish the headlines.
  • Compile stories of all the learners in the class to make a form of newspaper.

Questions for Consideration

  • How do you currently deal with this area of work in the classroom?
  • Do you use any ICT based methods to gather and present information, and how do you manage use of these?
  • What are the main problems encountered by learners when they work at finding information and producing text to structure the information that they have found?

Keep a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion with your mentor.

b. Deciding Whether to Use ICT
