Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching
a.
Aims and Objectives
The
teacher's aim for the sake of this case study is to introduce
learners to the short story by Vivian Roberts, 'Y Nadolig y Bu
Bron i Siôn Corn Farw'. In this case the learners are Year 10
pupils in a mixed gender comprehensive school and the text is
appropriate to set tasks in the National Curriculum document.
As
we meet the teacher, she has previously read the story and likes
it, though she is concerned at the extent and quality of the follow-up
work for this text in the school. The pupils have rarely experienced
reading Welsh short stories, or any other extended Welsh language
piece of literature in a formally assessed setting.
Specifically,
the teacher wants the pupils at this phase of their learning on
the book to:
-
Relate the plot of the story, in their own words in Welsh, to
a third person, and in so doing:
- Describe
the main characters
- Identify
the main theme of the story
- Undertake
follow-up work using the resources provided on the CD-ROM.
- Contact
the author by e-mail and ask questions relating to the story.
Questions
for Consideration
- How
do you currently deal with this or any other similar text in
the classroom?
- Do
you use pictures, cartoon images or video to illustrate points,
and how do you manage use of these?
- What
are the main problems encountered by pupils when they work with
any Welsh language texts?
Keep
a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion
with your mentor.
