Propaganda
Posters
STEP
ONE
Study
the images below (click on the images for a closer look and background
information)
1.
Organize the posters into 4 categories:
-
MOCKING
THE ENEMY - Posters which depict the enemy as inhuman and evil.
-
THE HOME
FRONT - Posters which concentrate on boosting morale at home.
-
RECRUITMENT
- Posters which encourage people to join the army.
-
THE GLORY
OF WAR - Posters which make war seem heroic and exciting.
-
You can
do this using PUBLISHER, WORD, or similar software.
-
Start
with MOCKING THE ENEMY - copy the images that fit into this category and
paste them into word processing or desk-top publishing software. This works
particularly well with PUBLISHER as images can be re-sized and moved around
freely.
-
Start
a new page and repeat this process for each category.
STEP
TWO
Study
the images again.
2.
Do any of the posters fit equally well into more than one category?
-
If so,
copy the images and paste them into the next appropriate category e.g.
Does one 'recruitment' poster also 'mock the enemy'?
STEP
THREE
Use
the background information on each poster.
3.
Are the messages different in each country?
-
Using
the images you have already copied organize the posters into separate countries.
-
What do
you notice about the use of propaganda in different parts of the world?
