Good Practice: Millie's Maths House
Shoe Shop
- Print out characters and enlarge, laminate and Velcro. Match shoes and hat to appropriate character.
- Selection of shoes to sort into pairs.
- Classify shoes into different groups –buckles, laces, Velcro, slip-ons and represent in graph form.
- Draw around feet and cut out. Measure with non-standard measures e.g uni-fix block.
- Use a large shoe print in card with holes around the edge. Use with thread, wool to sew.
Cookie Factory: Decorating Felt Cookies
- Make 6 felt cookies and 15 felt jelly beans with Velcro backing.
- Number cards with 0- 5 jellybeans on them.
- Number cards 0-5.
- You will also need two containers and frog and horse hand puppets.
Children are required to count the number of jellybeans requested, placing the felt jellybeans on the cookies:
- Matching jellybean cards
- Matching number symbol and jellybeans
- Matching to number symbol only
Other children can be Harley and Froggy using the hand puppets.
- Who gets the cookie?
- Is it the correct quantity of jellybeans on that cookie?
Cookie Factory: Decorating Cookies using Play-Doh
You will require:
- Play-Doh x two colours
- Rollers
- Circular cutters
- Playdough knife
- Instruction cards
This activity is very similar to the previous activity. The children are required to cut the correct number of cookies as illustrated on the card and count the required number of jellybeans too. For example, 2 cookies with 3 jellybeans each.
Build a Bug
- Download a picture of a blank bug and simply create your own bug by drawing antennae, legs, eyes and so on.
- Make a large felt 3D bug and felt parts. Children throw a dice to create your own bug.
- Large blank bug outline. Two dice, one with body parts on each face, the other with numbers. Children roll the dice and velcro the appropriate number and type of features.
- After creating a bug on the computer, use construction materials and clay or dough to recreate your bug.
- Print out bugs created on the computer. Make cards of component parts of different amounts. Children select the appropriate numbered parts.
