d. Developing Your Own Knowledge of the Resources

The teacher in the case study needed to become very familiar with PowerPoint, as she would be using it interactively in front of the whole class (some of whom would already be familiar with it), and she would be teaching it to pupils.

She worked through the tutorial provided with the program, noting the key points about its functions as she did so. She particularly considered which functions she would need in order to create a simple presentation which would help the pupils focus on the key points, rather than being distracted by flashy effects. She then analysed what the differences were from a WP or DTP package, as she would want to stimulate the pupils into thinking about this point when they learned to use the program.

Points for Consideration

  • Carry out this analysis yourself, making sure that you are familiar with the techniques available.
  • Think of three purposes for which basic word processing would be the best option, three purposes for which DTP would be best and three for which PowerPoint would be best. Which of these purposes would be suitable for a question sheet for pupils on the issue of selecting software?
  • Produce a brief pupil guide to PowerPoint (or whichever presentations package you will be using).
