c. Helping Learners Develop their own IT Capabilities

The main focus of the teaching in this case study has been the "theoretical" issues of data protection and security. In using ICT to help with the teaching and learning of these matters, pupils should develop aspects of their own IT capability. In particular, they should have:

  • Refined their searching skills, through searching for particular information on a CD-ROM and/or WWW.
  • Practised their skills in writing reports for an audience using WP and developed a wider range of presentation techniques in learning the basics of a presentation program.

Points for Consideration

IT capability can be considered to comprise:

  • Routines - procedures we carry out without conscious thought.
  • Techniques - procedures where we follow instructions or consciously recall steps in order to achieve an effect.
  • Processes - such as modelling - which are made up of sequences of techniques selected in order to achieve a goal.
  • Strategies - planning, monitoring, evaluating, reflecting on learning.

Identify examples in this sequence of lessons where pupils developed each of these components of IT capability. Try to identify:

  1. The ways in which the demands of the work have increased from what has been expected previously.
  2. How you are going to support the pupils in learning from the challenges you set them.

d. Assessing Learning
