c. Developing Your Own Knowledge of the Resources

The teacher concerned was familiar with the main spreadsheet techniques in Excel, but wanted to make the models attractive and "pupil proof". She thus needed to be able to use a range of cell formatting features, such as text/background colour, borders, decimal places, cell size, font size/style.

She found it quite easy to control all of these by choosing suitable menu options. She also wanted to be able to 'lock' most of the cells, so that pupils were only able to change the values she wanted them to. She found the "Protection" option on the "Tools" menu, but couldn't work out how to lock particular cells. She used the 'Help' option in Excel to look up 'lock cell' (with no response) and 'protection', which added little to what she had tried herself.

However, a conversation with a colleague during lunch soon pointed her in the direction of the "Format Cells" route, choosing the "Protection" tab in order to find the option to lock selected cells.

Point for Consideration

  • Look at the results of the teacher's work in the spreadsheet FLOWER. Check that you can control all the features incorporated:
    • unprotect the sheet and make changes in order to improve the design of the spreadsheet.
