Part 2:
Teaching with ICT

a. Structuring Lessons

This was to be much more of a whole-class lesson than the usual approach, which involved work on individual learning programmes. The teacher, therefore, planned for the lesson to have three stages.

Case Study Lesson Structure

  • Briefing the whole group, explaining the task and the terminology, and demonstrating on a large screen the main techniques which they would use (10 minutes).
  • Individual work on computers, with printed sheets to refer to when they needed a reminder of something (40 minutes).
  • A review at the end to show good work around the class and to make clear to pupils what they had learned (10 minutes).

Questions for Consideration

Consider this structure in relation to your pupils.

  1. Do you think they would be able to concentrate on an activity for 40 minutes?
  2. Would they refer to printed help sheets?
  3. What other help would you plan to provide?

b. Managing Learning in the Classroom
