Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching

a. Aims and Objectives

This case study specifically concerns a group of pupils whose attainment in mathematics was low. Many of the pupils had difficulties with most areas of the curriculum, and were hard to motivate. Some had specific statements of special educational need because of learning or behavioural problems.

Questions for Consideration

  • Do you teach a group of pupils similar to the one described?
  • Have you taught groups like this in the past?
  • What type of activities have you found to be successful?
  • Have you used ICT with low-attaining pupils?

Keep a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion with your mentor.

In this case study, the teacher's general aims were to involve the small group of pupils in mathematical activity together. He wanted each to achieve an outcome of their own, but also to exchange ideas about solutions to the challenges set. The challenge had to be easily comprehensible, practical in nature, and achievable in a short period. As they had been concentrating on number work for some weeks, he decided to introduce a geometrical activity for a change. The teacher's specific objectives were:

  • Pupils should be able to investigate different alternatives when trying to solve a problem, and persevere to find a satisfactory solution.
  • Pupils should see the effects of rotation and reflection of shapes, learn to predict what happens to a shape when it is reflected or rotated, and practise using the vocabulary associated with transformations of shapes.
  • Pupils should understand what is meant by a tessellation, and learn to predict which shapes will tessellate.

He wanted to minimise requirements for pupils to write or produce careful drawings. Most of the group found both of these processes difficult and frustrating, with consequent effects on motivation and concentration. However, he also wanted to ensure that they had something definite to show for their work by the end.

Point for Consideration

  • Identify which aspects of the Mathematics programmes of study will be involved in this topic.

b. Selecting ICT Resources
