d. Assessing Learning

The teacher assessed the mathematical objectives by observing the results produced to find evidence of understanding:

  • Space must be filled completely.
  • The same shape must be repeated.
  • Only certain angles will fit together.
  • What effect a reflection or rotation has on different shapes.

He also observed the way in which the task was carried out, in order to assess the pupils' ability to explore possibilities, overcome difficulties, try alternative solutions, etc. He prompted and questioned them to help clarify what they had done and to enable them to make progress without actually doing the work for them.

Question for Consideration

  • What statements in the Mathematics NC level descriptions will this work provide evidence for?
