Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching
a.
Aims and Objectives
The
teacher's aim for the sake of this case study is to introduce
learners to the concept of timbre in music, specifically as it
is presented in the Wales Curriculum 2000 specifications as 'quality
of sound produced using voices, instruments and other sources
in a variety of ways'. In this case the learners are KS 3 pupils
in a mixed gender comprehensive school. As we meet the teacher,
she has previously taught the concept in a variety of ways, but
has concentrated on access to live instruments and other sources
of sound rather than technologically based sources.
Specifically,
the teacher wants the pupils at this phase of their learning of
music to:
- Explain
the concept of timbre using speech or writing.
- Apply
descriptions of timbre to a variety of musical and other sounds.
- Apply
general descriptions of timbre to classes of instrument.
- Relate
timbre to the effects produced in the listener, specifically
effects of image and atmosphere in music and sound.
- Begin
to discuss timbre in the context of melodic, accompanied and
polyphonic pieces.
Questions
for Consideration
- How
do you currently deal with the job of introducing this or other
musical concepts in the classroom?
- Do
you use audio tape, video, pictures or cartoon images to illustrate
points, and how do you manage use of these?
- What
are the main problems encountered by pupils when they are being
introduced to any new musical concept?
Keep
a short record of your responses to these questions for discussion
with your mentor.
