Part 1:
Preparing to Use ICT in Teaching

a. Aims and Objectives

In this case study, pupils are covering the basic principles of nutrition and the energy value of different foods. The task (Peanut practical) will involve them in finding out about the energy released from the combustion of various nuts. The lesson aims and objectives, along with an account of the resources needed and issues to consider, are set out in the tables that follow below and on the next page.

Lesson Aim Pupil Learning Outcomes

To compare the energy value of different nuts.

  • Pupils will learn to use a temperature sensor and data logger to measure and record the energy released from burning nuts, and understand the value of the speed and automatic functions of ICT in experimentation.
  • Pupils will discover the relative energy values of different food items through the interpretation of graphs and the use of spreadsheets
