Uses
of CD-ROM
There
are two general uses for CD-ROM:
The
first kind stores programs for installation onto your computer's
hard disk. For example, Microsoft Office is usually distributed
on CD-ROM, and needs to be installed from the CD onto you computer.
Once installed, the program runs directly from your hard disk.
The
second type installs only a few files from the CD, allowing you
to open and search for information - however, the CD-ROM must
be present in the CD disk drive during use. An example of this
type is Microsoft Encarta, and other CD-ROM encyclopaedias.
