Future
Developments
As
with all areas of computing, there is much development work being
undertaken with CD-ROMs and multimedia in general.
- A
much greater variety of content available, entering more specialised
teaching domains.
- A
greater availability of recordable CDs of two different types
- CD-R or CD-Recordable, which can only be recorded onto once
and CD-RW or CD Rewritable, which can be recorded on (or written
to) many times. Please note that a special type of CD drive
is necessary for this.
- DVD-ROM
which stands for Digital Versatile Disc-Read Only Memory. These
look similar to CD-ROMs, but hold up to 4.7Gb of data (at present).
Again, a specific type of drive - ie. a DVD drive - is required
to read these discs.
- General
availability of multimedia authoring software such as Asymetrix
Toolbox, Macromedia Director and many others allow you to produce
your own multimedia programs.
