My
Computer
This folder icon appears at the top left-hand side of the screen
and is the most important of all the icons on the Desktop, at
least for file management.
To
open My Computer, double-click the icon. When it opens, your screen
should look something like this:
The contents of the My Computer folder can vary from machine to
machine. However, it will always contain the following icons:
C:
The Hard Disk
A:
The Floppy Disk
Printers
Folder Contains details of printers connected to the system
On
network systems there will also be a number of other drive letters
attached to the system, which vary from machine to machine. For
example:
Z:\Staff
This folder will normally have your name as a member of staff
on it.
P:
A public drive - one that is accessible by everyone, ie. under
both staff and student logins.
Control
Panel Usually you cannot access this folder for administrative
or security reasons.
The
letters and/or names of these drives will vary between different
networks and different individual machines.
If
you picture the different drives C:, A:, Z:, etc. in a similar
way to a home stereo - which has different buttons to switch to
different parts - the drive letters work in a similar way.
To
view one of these folders, double-click on it. This will then
open a new window showing its contents. Try this on the C: folder.
