Methods
of Presentation
A
PowerPoint slide show can be presented using a many methods, all
of which should have speaker and audience notes produced for them:
Computer
Screen
A computer screen is useful at an exhibition display or in a shop
window for an automatic repeated presentation of a slide show.
Many speakers use an overhead projection tablet that fits on an
overhead projector but this requires the computer to be transported
to the venue of the presentation - not a great problem these days
with laptop/notebook PCs. The larger the monitor, the better for
multiple viewing. Alternatively, some slide/presentation projectors
can be hooked up directly to a computer. This is very effective
when you need to give examples of displays of on-line computer
activity, eg. Internet, e-mail, etc.
Overhead
Projector
OHP are common, so this form of output is frequently used. This
method can give a high resolution and a bright display. There
are portable overhead projectors available. The downside - new
printouts are needed if alteration is required.
35mm
Slides
These must be specially developed from slide film photos taken
by a 35mm camera. A slide projector is common and portable technology,
some having infra-red handsets allowing the speaker more freedom
to move. This method is capable of a high resolution and bright
display but slides cannot easily be amended and new photos are
required.
HTML
or Web Pages
In the 97 and 2000 versions of PowerPoint, files can be saved
either as presentations or as HTML files, which can be uploaded
directly to the Internet as pages on the World Wide Web.
CD-Recorder
A CD 'burner' could be used to store the presentation on a recordable
CD for use on other multimedia computers.
Video
Using an S/VGA to Video converter, or a video card, the entire
presentation could be saved onto VHS Tape for distribution to
areas where there are no PCs.
Notes
Speaker's Notes
The speaker is the person who will describe the slides. For the
assignment you have to prepare notes for the speaker to create
Speaker's Notes. To produce these:
- Choose
Note Pages view.
- Locate
the required slide in show.
- Key
in these example notes for the CIT slide show as shown in the
table below.
- To
print click the File menu and select Print. In the Print dialog
box select Notes Pages under the 'Print What' option.

Audience
Handouts
For any presentation to be effective, it is usually advisable
to provide the audience with handouts containing thumbnail prints
of the slides being given out. The audience will then not be distracted
by having to take their own notes. These are also a requirement
for the assignment. To print, choose Handouts/6 slides per page
on the Print dialog box.
