d. Developing Your Own Knowledge of the Resources

Having made decisions about using some of the resources and opportunities in tandem, it is important for the teacher in the case study to get to know the resources well enough to feel confident about using them in the classroom. It is also important that the pupils will feel comfortable about using resources.

We can focus on this with an exercise that should provide some focus on the whole of the Bized site, and the ways in which you can combine elements of it to make learning interesting and to make your own life more productive.

First, the relevant web addresses are:

www.bized.ac.uk
Bized home page.

www.bized.ac.uk/virtual
Virtual Factory/Economy.

www.bized.ac.uk/virtual/cb
Download the Factory.

www.bized.ac.uk/virtual/economy/model
Virtual Economy - must be run online.

The download of the Factory is also available from this site, as are the printed instructions on loading it to your own computer or network.

How do I download files from the Web?

Have a look at the site first, and get a sense of how it is organised and arranged. You will see a variety of resources that you can use - don't be put off if the old curriculum specifications are still on (they were at the last up-date of this case study, on August 15th 2000) - most of the resources still have high value. Then answer the questions below:

  1. Once you have looked around the Virtual Factory, identify briefly where in the GNVQ you think it would be useful - I made some suggestions earlier in the case study that you might want to improve upon.
  2. Take a look at the Business data for the featured companies - how might you integrate some of this data with a project featuring the Virtual Economy?

When you have looked at the web site in the light of these questions, and perhaps written some worksheets of your own to go with these resources, you should discuss with your mentor what you want to do with the material in the classroom. This can be done in a mentor visit, over the telephone or by e-mail, and should serve merely to satisfy you that you are on the right track with your use of the materials.
