b. Evaluating the Resources Used

Information on the WWW can come from any source. There are obvious advantages in selecting gateways and test-running searches on the selected search engines. When using CD-ROM's for this activity the following general points could be considered:

  • Ease of use - pupils and teachers need to get straight from the ICT to the subject learning, without complex loading or other access issues.
  • Interactivity - pupils should as far as possible be able to gain an active rather than a passive relationship with the resource, and be able to control the source of information as well as handling the information itself.
  • Guidance - where more complex searches and other data-handling procedures are demanded, the resource should provide adequate instruction on how to do this.
  • Technical robustness - the resource should work under a variety of technical conditions. This is especially true of the WWW sites you use, which should be as accessible late in the day as they are in the morning.
  • Flexibility for use with other learners - any resource that you can use with a variety of learners under a variety of conditions will help you make most effective use of the limited time you have.

Question for Consideration

  • How did the resources you used in following the work from the case study perform in relation to these criteria?

c. Adapting the Resources for Different Learners or Work
