Launching
or Starting Programs
As
with all computer systems, there are a number of different ways
in which the same thing can be made to happen.
Method
1 - Using the Start Button
- Click
on the Start button
- On
the 'pop-up' menu that appears, click Programs
- On
the sub-menu that appears, click on the application program
that you want to launch, for example Microsoft Word. The program
will then launch.
Method
2 - Using a Shortcut
A
shortcut refers to a type of icon or picture on the Desktop. On
most computers, these can be identified by the small arrow at
the bottom left-hand side of the icon (see illustration). The
shortcut is so called because double-clicking on it will launch
the program. To launch an application using this method:
- Position
the mouse pointer over an icon on your Desktop
- Double-click
the left-hand mouse button
- The
program will launch
Method
3 - Using the Programs Toolbar
You
may have a program toolbar on the right-hand side of your screen
(for example, Microsoft Office) for easy access to commonly used
programs on your computer like Word, Excel etc.
- Position
the mouse pointer over the icon for the program you want to
use. (If you hold the mouse pointer over the icon for a second
or so, a small box appears to show you what that icon is for).
- Click
the icon once with the left-hand mouse button.
- The
program will launch.
Other methods for accessing programs exist, which will be covered
in other sections. To close any of these programs, click on the
Close button at the top right-hand corner of the screen.
