Different
Types of Icons
The
icons that appear on the Desktop represent a number of different
types of software. They all look broadly similar, but carry out
different tasks.
Shortcut:
A shortcut or icon will appear on the Desktop, usually recognised
by a small arrow on the bottom left-hand corner of the icon (though
default Desktop shortcuts like My Computer, Network Neighborhood
and Recycle Bin do not have this arrow). Double-clicking any shortcut
will launch the relevant program.
File:
This is the basic unit, for example a word processed document
or a graphic image is usually referred to as a file.
Folder:
A folder normally contains a range of one or more files. One folder
can also contain a number of other folders. Illustrated below
is the contents of the My Computer folder, note that it contains
further folders such as Control Panel, Printers etc.
