What
is a Database?
A
database is a collection of information that is organised and
stored for a purpose. In computer terms, a database is an application
which will allow information to be stored, retrieved, interrogated,
interpreted and presented.
Databases
can be used to support themes/topics where pupils collect data
to interrogate the data by asking simple questions. Information
from the database can be displayed as graphs or charts.
Examples
of using a Database:
- Weather
Results: collect information on the weather, eg. amount
of sunshine, rainfall, wind strength, etc. Using pertinent questions
the data can be interrogated. Graphs can be used to represent
the information.
- All
About Me: pupils can record their hair colour, height, eye
colour and use the database to find the number of children who
have the same eye colour.
- Shoe
or shoe size: what type of shoe is the most popular in the
class? What is the average size of shoe in the class?
- Food:
pupils can record the meals that they eat each day.
-
Teddies: pupils can record the colours of eyes, hair
and clothes that a teddy will have.
