Range of LOGO Tasks

The tasks below will enable you to make a judgement about the activity level you wish to support with your training.

Novice Intermediate Advanced

Novice Task:

Decide on the focus for the activity and the desired learning outcomes.

Become familiar with the program.

Prepare differentiated, focused tasks/activities for pupils to explore, and investigate areas such as:

  • tessellation
  • symmetry
  • shape
  • angles
  • repeating patterns
  • number

Provide opportunities for pupils to save, retrieve, amend and print procedures.

Prepare questions that encourage pupils to extend/reinforce/focus the activity.

Demonstrate to pupils how to:

  • enter direct commands to create shapes on screen
  • use pre-drawn shapes or shape tools (if available) to create simple 2D shapes/patterns
  • save, retrieve, amend and print work

Learning Outcomes for the Teacher

Using the program, know how to:

  • enter direct commands to create shapes and patterns on screen
  • create procedures through a sequence of direct commands
  • save, retrieve, amend and print

Resources

  • LOGO software
  • computer
  • printer
  • differentiated, focused pupil worksheets/task cards

Intermediate Task:

Decide on the focus for the activity and the desired learning outcomes.

Prepare differentiated, focused tasks/activities for pupils to explore and investigate areas such as:

  • tessellation
  • symmetry
  • shape
  • angles
  • repeating patterns
  • number

Using the example of a regular shape created line by line, introduce and develop Repeat procedures to create regular shapes and patterns.

Create more complex procedures involving Repeat commands producing spectacular patterns by rotating shapes through 360°.

Prepare questions that encourage pupils to extend/reinforce/focus the activity.

Provide opportunities for pupils to save, retrieve, amend and print procedures.

Demonstrate to pupils how to:

  • create procedures by entering a sequence of direct commands to produce shapes on screen
  • use pre-drawn shapes or shape tools (if available) to create simple 2D shapes/patterns
  • use Repeat procedures to create regular shapes and patterns
  • rotate shapes through 360° to produce patterns
  • use a greater range of tools - eg. change line style and colour
  • save, retrieve, amend and print work

Learning Outcomes for the Teacher

Using the program, know how to:

  • create procedures through a sequence of direct commands to create shapes and patterns on screen
  • repeat routines to create regular shapes
  • rotate shapes through 360° using the Repeat facility
  • use a greater range of tools within the software, such as line style/width
  • save, retrieve, amend and print work

  • LOGO software
  • computer
  • printer
  • differentiated, focused pupil worksheets/task cards

Advanced Task:

Decide on the focus for the activity and the desired learning outcomes.

Prepare differentiated, focused tasks/activities for pupils to:

  • use sub-procedures to create more complex effects, such as creating overlapping patterns from a variety of shapes
  • combine sub-procedures to build more complex procedures - eg. using the screen turtle to draw a robot which consists of simple procedures for head, body, limbs etc.
  • use the Repeat command to draw another robot and draw bigger or smaller robots by modifying the sub-procedures

Provide opportunities for pupils to investigate and change the sizes of shapes already created by editing procedures, sub-procedures and repeats, to answer questions of the type: "What would happen if...?"

Enable pupils to create their own scenes in a graphic package to use within a LOGO application.

Prepare questions that encourage pupils to extend/reinforce/focus the activity.

Provide opportunities for pupils to save, retrieve, amend and print procedures.

Demonstrate to pupils how to:

  • create and combine sub-procedures to build more complex procedures
  • edit procedures, sub-procedures and Repeats
  • create a scene in a graphic package to use within a LOGO application
  • save, retrieve, amend and print work

Learning Outcomes for the Teacher

Using the program, know how to:

  • create sub-procedures
  • combine and modify sub-procedures
  • use the Repeat command and modify procedures and sub-procedures to create bigger or smaller shapes
  • create scenes in a graphic package and use within the LOGO application
  • save, retrieve, amend and print work

  • LOGO software
  • computer
  • printer
