What
is Data Handling?
Data
Handling is the sorting and classifying of information or facts,
in order to establish patterns and draw conclusions.
What
is a Database?
A database is a collection of information that is organised and
stored for a purpose. In computer terms, a database is an application
which will allow information to be stored, retrieved, interrogated,
interpreted and presented.
Databases
can be used to support themes/topics where pupils collect data
to interrogate the data by asking simple questions. Information
from the database can be displayed as graphs or charts.
Examples
of using a Database:
- Weather
Results: collect information on the weather - eg. amount
of sunshine, rainfall, wind strength, etc. Using pertinent questions
the data can be interrogated. Graphs can be used to represent
the information.
-
All About Me: pupils can record their hair colour, height,
eye colour and use the database to find the number of children
who have the same eye colour.
-
Shoe or Shoe Size: what type of shoe is the most popular
in the class? What is the average size of shoe in the class?
-
A Tudor Database containing information on Tudor personalities
- eg. explorers and monarchs.
-
Houses: the type of materials used in the house, on the
roof, window frames - eg. how many windows in the house? How
many rooms? How many bedrooms?
