What
is Monitoring?
Monitoring
involves the measuring and interpretation of external events through
a range of sensors. Examples include pulse monitors, temperature
probes, sound sensors, light sensors or complete weather stations.
Readings
can be taken directly into a computer program or transferred from
data logging equipment. Some data loggers can collect data remotely
- ie. without being connected to a computer system. Monitoring
using sensors can be used to support investigating activities
within curriculum areas such as science and geography. The interpretation
of the data collected can greatly enhance literacy and numeracy
skills.
Examples
of using Monitoring:
-
tasks could include the collection of data from a simple investigation
- eg. pulse data, measured via a pulse monitor, could be displayed
on a screen before and after physical exercises
- tasks
could become more complex by using a variety of sensors within
a specific investigation - eg. temperatures of areas in direct
sunlight or in shade could be recorded and interpreted. This
type of investigation would require both a temperature probe
and light sensor.
