Range
of Data Handling Tasks
The
tasks below will enable you to make a judgement about the activity
level you wish to support with your training.
Novice
Task:
Decide
on the focus for the activity and the desired learning outcomes
for ICT and focused subjects.
Become
familiar with the program.
Create
a database using numeric and alphanumeric values. The number of
fields created will depend on the ages and previous experiences
of the children.
Create
a data capture sheet, which has the same field names as the database.
Create
a set of questions which will allow simple interrogation - eg.
How many children have blue eyes?
Devise
further questions which will enable the children to interpret
the graph.
Demonstrate
to pupils how to:
- complete
the data capture sheet
- enter
information from the data capture sheet into the database
-
save the database
- use
the database to answer questions
- plot
a graph
Prepare
differentiated, cross-curricular tasks/activities, which will
allow pupils to:
- collect
data and complete the data capture sheet
- transfer
the information from the data capture sheet into the database
- save
the database
- plot
a graph
- devise
a set of questions which enables children to interrogate the
graph
Learning
Outcomes for the Teacher
Using
the program, know how to:
- create
a database using numeric and alphanumeric values
- create
a data capture sheet, which contains identical fields to the
database
- create
a set of questions to interrogate the database - eg. How many
children have blue eyes?
- devise
another set of questions, which enables children to interrogate
the graph

files/graphs/lists
Prepare
differentiated, cross-curricular tasks/activities, which will
allow pupils to:
- collect
data and complete the data capture sheet
- enter
the information from the data capture sheet into the database
- save
completed records
- retrieve
and amend information when necessary
- answer
complex questions using AND, OR, NOT operators - eg:
