This task will enable you to work within the Monitoring strand of ICT as well as supporting science-based activities.

The topic/theme to be supported should specifically entail work that involves monitoring external events within a given situation. Monitoring involves the electronic collection of data during an investigation. Readings taken from sensors may be displayed via suitable software in a variety of ways. The interpretation of these readings enhances both literacy and numeracy skills.

Intermediate Task:

Decide on the given monitoring situation - ie. what are the pupils going to monitor?

Decide on the monitoring equipment to be used - eg. what sensors, logging equipment, software etc.

Ensure that the equipment and sensors are working properly.

Become familiar with the monitoring software.

Introduce the software and monitoring equipment to the pupils.

Demonstrate how to monitor a simple external event using a sensor - eg. the cooling of a liquid.

Demonstrate how the readings can be used to plot a graph.

Discuss the graph with pupils, allowing opportunities for the pupils to interpret the graph.

Prepare focused tasks or worksheets for pupils to use.

Ensure that pupils are fully aware of the tasks that they are required to do.

Provide opportunities for pupils to carry out a variety of monitoring exercises based around the theme or topic.

Ensure that pupils regularly save and retrieve their readings.

Allow pupils opportunities to plot and interpret graphs, and write about conclusions drawn.

Ensure that there is constant assessment of the monitoring situation.

Ensure that there is continuity and progression.
