Range
of Spreadsheet Tasks
The
tasks below will enable you to make a judgement about the activity
level you wish to support with your training.
Novice
Task:
Decide
on the focus for the activity and the desired learning outcomes.
Decide
on the content of the spreadsheet.
Collect
the data.
Using
a spreadsheet program, create a simple tally sheet into which
pupils can enter the collected data.
Use
the built-in formulae or functions - eg. Sum and/or Average.
Decide
what graphs to plot from the information.
Plot
and interpret the graphs.
Demonstrate
to pupils how to:
- enter
data into a spreadsheet
- use
built-in formulae or functions - eg. Sum and/or Average
- save,
retrieve and print the spreadsheet
- plot
a graph from the data
- save
a graph as an image to use in a word processor
Prepare
differentiated, focused pupil worksheets.
Allow
pupils to interpret the graphs and hypothesise about the reasons
for, eg. the above or below average findings.
Learning
Outcomes for the Teacher
Using
the program, know how to:
- create
a spreadsheet
- use
the built-in formulae or functions - eg. Sum and/or Average
-
save, retrieve and print the spreadsheet
- plot
a graph from the data
- save
a graph as an image to use in a word processor

Intermediate
Task:
Decide
on the focus for the activity and the desired learning outcomes.
Decide
on the content of the spreadsheet.
Collect
the data.
Enter
appropriate formulae to calculate a variety of mathematical operations
- eg. add two numbers together and multiply the result by two.
Decide
what graphs to plot from the information.
Plot
and interpret the graphs.
Demonstrate
to pupils how to:
- enter
data into a spreadsheet
- enter
appropriate formulae
- save,
retrieve, amend and print the spreadsheet
- plot
a graph from the data
- save
the graph as an image to use in a word processor
Prepare
differentiated, focused pupil worksheets.
Set
an investigation for the pupils to interpret their results.

Advanced
Task:
Decide
on the focus for the activity and the desired learning outcomes.
Decide
on the content of the spreadsheet.
Collect
the data.
Enter
appropriate formulae to calculate a variety of mathematical operations
where there is a need to Copy/Fill formulae rather than repeatedly
enter formulae into each relevant cell.
Use
Copy/Fill facility over a range of cells.
Change
data in a cell and predict outcomes.
Decide
what graphs to plot from the information.
Plot
and interpret the graphs.
Save
graphs as images to use in a word processor.
Demonstrate
to pupils how to:
- enter
data into a spreadsheet
- enter
appropriate formulae
- use
Copy/Fill facility
- change
data in a cell
- save,
retrieve, amend and print the spreadsheet
- plot
graphs from the data
- save
graphs and use them in a word processor
Prepare
differentiated, focused tasks/activities which enable pupils to
interpret graphs, and create opportunities to carry out investigations
of the type: "What would happen if...?" For example,
changing the contents of a cell or changing the mathematical sign.
