This
task will enable you to work within the Monitoring strand of ICT
as well as supporting science-based activities.
The
topic/theme to be supported should specifically entail work that
involves monitoring external events within a given situation.
Monitoring involves the electronic collection of data during an
investigation. Readings taken from sensors may be displayed via
suitable software in a variety of ways. The interpretation of
these readings enhances both literacy and numeracy skills. Pupil
ICT skills can also be further developed by transferring data,
such as graphs, into a word processor. This allows pupils to write
about their investigations, interpretations and conclusions.
Advanced
Task:
Decide
on the given monitoring situation - ie. what are the pupils going
to monitor?
Decide
on the monitoring equipment to be used - eg. what sensors, data
logging equipment, software etc.
Ensure
that the equipment and sensors are working properly.
Become
familiar with the monitoring software.
Introduce
the software and monitoring equipment to the pupils.
Demonstrate
how to monitor external events using a variety of sensors.
Demonstrate
how readings can be used to plot graphs.
Demonstrate
how graphs can be imported and manipulated within a word processor.
Demonstrate
how conclusions can be written and presented alongside imported
graphs.
Discuss
graphs with pupils, allowing opportunities for pupils to interpret
graphs.
Prepare
focused tasks or worksheets for pupils to use.
Ensure
that pupils are fully aware of the tasks that they are required
to do.
Provide
opportunities for pupils to carry out a variety of monitoring
exercises based around the theme or topic.
Provide
opportunities for pupils to transfer graphs into a word processor
and write about interpretations and conclusions.
Encourage
pupils to present and desktop- publish their work effectively.
Ensure
that pupils regularly save, retrieve and edit their work.
Ensure
that there is regular assessment of the monitoring situation.
Ensure
that there is continuity and progression.
