This
task will enable you to use the Modelling strand of ICT while
supporting and enhancing mathematics.
The
topic/theme to be supported should be one where statistical information
is collected and Sum and Averages are needed - eg. if the topic
is making cakes the children can collect data about the amount
of ingredients required to make a given number of cakes. The information
can be placed in a spreadsheet, and formulae used to calculate
the amount of ingredients required to make a greater or smaller
number of cakes.
Advanced
Task:
Decide
on the focus for the activity and the desired learning outcomes.
Decide
on the content of the spreadsheet.
Collect
the data.
Use
a spreadsheet program to create a spreadsheet where there is a
need to Copy/Fill formulae, rather than repeatedly type it in.
Use
formulae to calculate the Sum and Average.
Decide
what graphs to plot from the information.
Produce
graphs and interpret the graphs.
Save
graphs as images to use in a word processor.
Change
the data in a cell and predict the outcome.
Demonstrate
to pupils how to:
- enter
data into a spreadsheet
- enter
formulae
- change
data in a cell
- produce
a graph from a range of data
- save
graph as an image and use in a word processor
Plan
differentiated, focused tasks/activities which enable pupils to
interpret graphs, and create opportunities to carry out investigations
of the type: "What would happen if...?" - eg. changing
the contents of a cell or changing the mathematical sign.
Resources
- spreadsheet
program
- computer
